Additional Details

Includes the full report on the burning of Washington sent by Major General Robert Ross: "I have the honour to communicate . . . the troops under my command entered and took possession of the city of Washington. . . . The following buildings were set fire to and consumed--the Capitol, including the senate-house and the House of Representation, the arsenal, the dock-yard, treasury, war-office, President's palace, rope-walk, and the great bridge across the Potowmack." Ross was killed by a sniper in Baltimore shortly after sending the report, and had already been dead for two weeks when this newspaper was printed, although that news had not yet reached England.
