Additional Details

Daniel E. Updike, member of a prominent family from Wickford, RI, writes from prison: "The misfortunes which has happened to my country on the destruction at the city of Washington, the capture of Castine, the loss of the ship Adams &c grieves me to the heart, but we must not submit to adversities. I hope these things will wake up every true American. . . . What will be the fate of Wickford God only knows; my fears are great for my property as well as others in that place."
