Additional Details

The first magazine appearance of the words to Francis Scott Key's "Star-Spangled Banner," here published anonymously in the November issue on pages 433-4 under the title "Defence of Fort M'Henry." An introduction explains the circumstances under which it was written, adding that "these lines have already been published in several of our newspapers; they may still, however, be new to many of our readers. Besides, we think that their merit entitles them to preservation in some more permanent form than the columns of a daily paper." BAL 11081G; Filby, Star-Spangled Books B18; Streeter sale II:1070.
