Additional Details

This map was published in The Universal Asylum and Columbia Magazine (Philadelphia, March 1792), by James Thackara and John Vallance. Interestingly, these two men had been engaged by Andrew Ellicot to produce a large scale map of the city, however they took months to complete that task, while issuing this smaller version in the meantime. Thus this map takes precedence as the first printed plan of Washington, D.C. Baynton-Williams 1; Goff, A la Cart, page 148; Miller pages 44-45; Tooley, Federal City, 1.
