Additional Details

An attractive composition dominated by an inset Washington portrait, apparently commemorating the American showing at London's 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition. Produced by two of the more obscure American lithographers: "No great amount of [Chillas's] work has come my way . . . [Thurwanger] was unexcelled in pen lithography. He did work here but I have no record of it"--Peters, America on Stone, pages 140 and 385. The only record found of this print is Mitchell, Collection of Engraved Portraits, 90, which describes it as "rare."
