Additional Details

The main announcement appears on the third page: "Washington Is No More!," based on a letter sent from Virginia on 15 December. It reports on the spontaneous displays of grief in Boston: "On receipt of the sorrowful tale, every countenance fell . . . the bells communicated the intelligence to the dwellings remote; the offices, stores and shops were immediately closed; a handbill from the theatre announced the postponement of amusement; and the citizens walked about, not knowing what to do." Washington's 1796 farewell address is reprinted in full on the first and second pages.
