Additional Details

Robert Shoemaker Dana (1833-1915) likely made two of these sketches while a Civil War surgeon with the 107th Pennsylvania Infantry. Potentially the most significant is one captioned "Wakefield, Westmoreland Co., Va., site of the house where Washington was born." Washington's birthplace burned when he was a boy, though a chimney and other ruins persisted into the 19th century. All Dana found to sketch were some scattered foundation stones. The site was very poorly marked until after Dana's time, but is now a national historic site. Also included are sketches titled "House which Washington and his Mother lived on the Rappahannock River opposite Fredericksburg" and "Washington House, Brington, Northamptonshire, Eng., built in 1606 for Lawrence Washington." The drawings are not signed, but were found with other signed art by Dana; see lots 196, 220, and 221.
