Additional Details

This portrait bears no printed title or publication information, but bears the manuscript inscription "Published in Boston, Mass, in 1796 by William Annesley." It is not recorded in Hart's catalogue of Washington engravings. It is not a match for any of the Washington life portraits in the Morgan-Fielding catalogue, although it does resemble the profiles by de Bréhan and St. Mémin. Only one other copy can presently be traced of this scarce portrait, at the Albany Institute of History and Art, which bears a similar manuscript inscription. A tavern in Sudbury, MA also had one on display in 1902 (see Prentice, "Historic Taverns of New England," in the Connecticut Magazine VII:5, page 468).
