Elizabeth "Betty" Washington Lewis (1733-1795) was the younger sister of President George Washington. She married Colonel Fielding Lewis (1725-1781), a merchant and plantation owner in Fredericksburg, VA. Offered here are 3 receipts issued to Fielding Lewis relating to the estate of Charles Carter, 1769-70 10 items issued to Betty Washington Lewis, 1786-96 and undated, including a surveyor's summary from 1797 and receipts for household items such as gold sleeve buttons, shoe buckles, and mending a hatchet. Most notably, she paid one bill in part "by hire Negro Scipio" for "27 dollars / £8.2.0." Also included are 4 items relating to her children: 2 letters from son-in-law Charles Carter to son George Lewis, 1802 and undated; a note regarding shirts for Fielding Lewis Jr., 1784; and a receipt to George Lewis for the Fielding Lewis estate, 1798.
