Additional Details

Daniel Parke Custis (1711-1757) is best known as the first husband of Martha Washington. This invoice lists charges against him for "makeing a callico gown" as well as "a silk gown," "a suit of cloaths," and "two wt callico gowns." The receipt on verso states that William Shields Vaughan "received the contents of the within accompt for the use of Elizabeth Vaughan." We can assume that the gowns were very likely made for Custis's new bride Martha, who he had married on 15 May 1750. Elizabeth Vaughan made at least one other gown for Martha Custis, according to a similar receipt at the Virginia Historical Society. William Shields Vaughan (1730-1797), who received the payment, was apparently the son of the seamstress.
