Additional Details

Peale was the last surviving artist to have painted Washington from life, which he did in 1795. In 1823, feeling that none of the existing life portraits captured Washington's "mild, thoughtful and dignified, yet firm and energetic countenance," he created a new image of the first president, dubbed the Port Hole Portrait. It was exhibited with testimonials from various old patriots who had known Washington. This lithograph was drawn on stone by Peale from his "Port Hole Portrait," though with the image reversed. Baker, Washington 379 ("very rare"); Carson catalogue 859 ("very beautiful specimen of the lithographic art"); Morgan, Life Portraits of Washington, pages 370-1.
