Additional Details

Custer's 1874 Black Hills Expedition had triggered a gold rush into the Dakota Territory. These prospectors encroached in existing Sioux territory and were half-heartedly prohibited from doing so by the United States government. However, both of these newspaper issues openly encouraged settlers with long articles, explaining how expeditions could be outfitted right in Cheyenne. Predictably, the miners fought with the Sioux, and when the Sioux refused to negotiate a new treaty, Washington launched the Great Sioux War.
