(WEST.) Photographs and programs from the career of John Henry Boutcher Cody, a Buffalo Bill protégé. 17 items: 9 photographs, 7 programs, and a newspaper featuring his obituary; some wear. Vp, circa 1910-1939

Additional Details

John Henry Boutcher (1858-1939) of Boscombe and Bournemouth, England bore an uncanny resemblance to the western celebrity William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917), which he cultivated in his dress and grooming. He assumed the surname Cody and passed it on to his children. If his obituary and the notes on these photographs are to be believed, he was Buffalo Bill's "descendant," went to California as a young man, fought Indians, served as Buffalo Bill's understudy, and organized his own Wild West show. While we are highly skeptical of some of these claims, the programs offered here show that he did make appearances when Buffalo Bill's Wild West toured England; several promise that the shows will be "demonstrated and introduced by J. Cody."
