Additional Details

Jesse James was shot by Robert Ford on the morning of 3 April 1882 in St. Joseph, MO. This newspaper was printed in St. Louis that same evening, in a report credited as "special to the Chronicle." The headline reads "Sure Of It This Time! " and the article expresses "not a doubt that this is the veritable Jesse." However, the Chronicle's editor expressed some skepticism in a bracketed note: "If special dispatches had not killed Jesse James twice already, we should place more confidence in the above." Now it's 140 years later, and some conspiracy theorists still aren't convinced that James was shot that evening.
No other 3 April reports on the killing are known.
