Additional Details

first edition of perhaps the most influential essay on American history. Turner observed that "up to our own day American history has been in a large degree the history of the colonization of the Great West" and concluded that "the frontier has gone, and with its going has closed the first period of American history." Turner's "Frontier Thesis" remains enormously influential among American historians, and hotly debated. To this day, the Frederick Jackson Turner Award is a great honor within the historical profession.
