Per the Montana State Library, Haynes visited Deadwood from mid-October to mid-November 1877, just a year after it became the West's most infamous mining boomtown, and two years before a fire wiped out most of the original structures. Among the shop signs on view here are the press of the Black Hills Times, Charles Karcher's boots, and in the far distance a livestock auction.
