Additional Details

These four snapshots were taken by an accomplished amateur near Fort Abraham Lincoln, an army post across the river from Bismarck. Custer and his troops departed from the fort in 1876 on their way to Little Big Horn. One photograph shows several tipis and buggies on the plains; another shows two local Mandans and a soldier standing with a dog-drawn cart. One is a street view of downtown Bismarck in its frontier glory.

Captain John Pitman (1842-1933), a Rhode Island native, was stationed at the fort as its chief ordnance officer from 1886 to 1889. He later became a Brigadier General upon his retirement in 1906.
