The Galveston posting of a statewide quarantine, in reaction to the latest in a series of horrific yellow fever epidemics which plagued the Texas coast. Not until the new century was it proved that the disease was spread by mosquitoes, at which point the breeding grounds were drained, and the disease virtually eliminated in the United States.
