"One of the best accounts of Texas on the eve of the revolution"--Jenkins, Basic Texas Books 53.

The author came from Scotland to teach in Gonzalez, TX for three years; he traveled extensively in Texas through the early 1830s, just before the Revolution. He provides useful information for his intended audience of emigrants, including observations on the local Indians, Mexicans, and English-speaking settlers, as well as natural history. The book is generally sympathetic to the Mexican administration, and was regarded as slanderous in some circles among the Texans. Clark, Old South III:35 ("extensively used as a basis for many other books on that state"); Howes E48 ("aa"); Streeter, Texas 1199.
