First separate edition, first state without "Piano, Guitar" on cover. This song first appeared as a blackface minstrel ballad in a Christy's Minstrels songbook in 1853, and has evolved into the unofficial state song of Texas. Its authorship is credited only to "J.K.," who may have been John Kelly of the Christy's Minstrels. Fuld, "Book of World-Famous Music," page 661.

With--the more commonly seen 1858 second state of this edition, with "Piano" added at bottom left and "Guitar" at bottom right.
