Additional Details

The Mazama Club (or "The Mazamas") was founded in 1894 as one of the earliest mountaineering groups in the nation. This album documents their 1914 outing to Mount Rainier near Seattle, from 1 to 12 August. 75 of the Mazamas climbers attempted the ascent, and 71 of them reached the summit. Most of these shots show climbers in addition to the spectacular mountain views. Many of the Mazamas were women; the club was ahead of its time in this regard. The captions are minimalist: "Snow formations, Upper Winthrop"; "A Ladder Bridge"; "The Last Snow Bridge."

The compiler of the album was apparently Roy James Davidson (1888-1985), an electrical engineer from Portland, OR. His much later address label is clipped to one leaf.
