(WESTERN PHOTOGRAPHY GUILD)

A selection of 20 original storyboards created by Don Whitman.
All but one of the storyboards has 6 photographs documenting a sitting with a single model or a pair of models (one board with 5 photographs). Others show a category of images, including "Prone Models" or "Supine Models." Models featured include Phil Lambert, Keith Lewin, Morris Simms, Browning-Pavich, Pat Burnham, Jerry Stevens, McGuire-Williams, Dick Mathias, Gene Garramone, Mike Hutton, Curtis Ryan, and Buck Youngblood. Silver prints, the images measuring 121x95 mm; 4 3/4x3 3/4 inches, and the reverse, the sheets slightly larger, the mounts 279x355 mm; 11x14 inches, each with a typed label with the model's name and inventory notations on mount recto. Circa 1950s-after 1966.

Whitman established the Western Photography Guild in 1947 and remained active for the next 50 years. Whitman was also one of the founders of Mr. Colorado Body Building Contest in 1950. With male physique photography in its heyday, Whitman used the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains to elevate his imagery. Whitman used these and other storyboards to market his various series of photographs, with each storyboard displaying the photographs included in a particular series. This group documents the changing stylistic elements of the genre, including the changing laws that allowed for full frontal male nudity.
