Letters from brother Gideon Whalon, written in an unidentified port, 1846; from brother Jonathan Whalon, Lahaina, Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), 1848; and from Jonathan Whalon, Fall River, 1851. Gideon's 1846 letter boasts: "We can murder a whale as quick as any other ship and no mistake. I have killed six myself." Complaining of the lack of letters, he adds, "I supose you don't think of an old fat colector very often." Jonathan writes in 1848 that "I have got stove twice but thay have not scared me so bad yet." Back at home in 1851, Jonathan writes of the strong labor market for an experienced hand: "I have had sevral chances to go again but I have declined excepting them as I have not ben at home but 5 days. I hardly dar go to New Bedford for as soon as I get in the town thare a plenty of frinds which wood be my humble sirvent if I wood go a whaling." with--Nicholas Whalon's account book as a Fall River blacksmith, 1834-1840.
