Each issue includes long full-column original essays by H.D. Edwards: "Life Scenes on Board a Yankee Whaler," "Incidents of a Whaling Voyage," "Romance of a Whaler's Life," and "Life Scenes on Board of a Sperm Whaler." The author was apparently Henry D. Edwards (1835-1876), who went to sea as a boy in 1851, and later settled in Detroit. His colorful reminiscences appear to be unpublished elsewhere.
This newspaper was only published for four years; today's Standard-Times derives from a later newspaper of the same name. Only a handful of other issues of this earlier title been preserved in libraries per Chronicling America, suggesting that the present lot is probably unique.
