Manter was a whaler on an unidentified vessel: "We have had rather hard luck. . . . Whaling is blew, very dul with us for about a month past. . . . I am very satisfied with the ship & all the crew. We have agreed so far like brothers." He died of tuberculosis five years later while returning home from another whaling voyage.
