Additional Details

J. & W.R. Wing was one of the largest whaling firms in the United States, and one of the last ones standing when they sent out their final ship in 1917. This volume, consisting mostly of 1930s copy prints, documents many of the firm's officers, captains, sailors, and ships. Captain Valentine Rose (see illustration) was a Cape Verdean who later bought his own ship, which was lost at sea with all hands en route to Cape Verde in 1915.
