(WHALING.) Pierce, Franklin. Four-language ship's passport issued to the whaler Lagoda. Partly-printed Document Signed by Pierce as President. One page, 16 3/4 x 21 1/2 inches; chipped, cleanly torn along some folds, subsequently repaired with cello tape which has left unsightly stains, the President's signature somewhat stained and cleanly torn through. Additional Details

Both a whaling paper and a presidential document. The ship Lagoda left New Bedford on 3 November 1853 to test its luck in the North Pacific. Benjamin B. Lamphier was the ship's master, but drowned in 1855. The ship returned home on 25 May 1856. Whaling Masters, page 179; Starbuck, page 502.
