Additional Details

Henry Hulsart Smith (1809-1851) was a resident of Rochester, MA near New Bedford. Most of his letters are devoted to reminiscences of home, interspersed with a few maritime scenes: "The next day after the gale, we saw a shoal of sperm whales & we had but one boat ready & it was verry rough, however I took the boat and went after them, but got none" (16 October 1844). According to Starbuck, the Factor had a successful voyage in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, but was condemned at Tahiti in July 1847.
