When her first poem was published in 1767, Phillis's abilities had been questioned by Boston's educated upper crust. In order to prove or disprove her talents, she was grilled by 18 of "the most respectable characters in Boston." She proved to be everything that the Wheatley family had claimed she was. Her celebrity was assured thereafter.
