(WHITMAN, WALT.) Brady, Matthew; photographer. Pair of large-format Civil War-era photographs of Walt Whitman. Albumen prints, each about 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches, on original plain mounts; mounts creased and slightly worn, one otherwise fresh, the other with moderate dampstaining to mount, a chipped corner and minor abrasions in image; each captioned in manuscript on mount recto: "Original photo of Walt Whitman taken by Brady during the Rebellion." [Washington?], circa 1862-67

Additional Details

Whitman and Brady were friends. Whitman later recalled: "We had many a talk together: the point was, how much better it would often be, rather than having a lot of contradictory records by witnesses or historians . . . if we could have three or four or half a dozen portraits, very accurate, of the men: that would be history—the best history—a history from which there could be no appeal" (With Walt Whitman in Camden, page III:553).
