Additional Details

Small group of letters written by Asahel Adams Scott (1829-1894) describing life in Allen's Grove, WI in the 1850s. Scott, a joiner and carpenter, helped construct several of the buildings in Allen's Grove, which he describes in his letters. These included the depot, the grist mill, a church, and his own house. He comments often on the difficulty of working through the Wisconsin winters. He discusses land claims, as well as the price of wages and crops in the region; he sells his house in July 1857 and moves into his shop, a plan of which he has drawn on the back of the letter. In January 1858 he acquires some land in Iowa, and encourages his brother to emigrate there with him, feeling it will be a more hospitable climate. Most of the letters are addressed to relatives in Waterbury, CT.
