The Kanouse brothers were the first verified quintuplets in the United States. One was stillborn, and the others died within hours. The Wisconsin Historical Society suggests that this post-mortem photograph was produced for the family's use, and that the photographer swore it would never be released. It must have been intended for release, as the photographer deposited it for copyright later in the year, but no other copies have been spotted at auction.
