Additional Details

Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955), is remembered for the founding of a school for African American girls that later became the Bethune-Cookman University, as well as founding in 1935 the National Council of Negro Women. Little banks like the present one were usually kept in places of business. The motto on the side states: Your contribution, given in love, whether in joy or sorrow, in prosperity or sacrifice, in memory or in honor, in devotion or in tribute, links you in spirit and in deed with Mary McLeod Bethune whose life was dedicated that mankind everywhere might live in peace and freedom."
