Additional Details

The Rinkeydinks were an unusual New York women's club, consisting mainly of the wives of jazz musicians. Offered here is a program for a formal dance they held at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom to benefit the children of Camp Minisink. 12 members are pictured, including President Flo Hawkins (actress and wife of trumpeter Erskine Hawkins), Mona Hinton (wife of bassist Milt), Hildegarde Bostic (wife of sax player Eugene), and Ruth Bowen (wife of singer Billy; she later became the president of the powerful Queen Booking Agency). The advertisements include greetings from numerous entertainers, including Sarah Vaughan, Bricktop, Sammy Davis Jr., and Erskine Hawkins, and a full-page illustrated ad from Harlem real estate mogul Murean Barbera Roberts.
