Additional Details

In this flier, a woman in a small and remote Texas city offers a wide variety of goods from her home: cosmetics "made exclusively to blend and harmonize with the texture of Colored Race skin and complexion," "Cake Coloring and Flavoring," a variety of patent medicines, and also religious goods. She explains that "we have been an agent taking orders and delivering these goods to the public for over twenty years, and have been your agent here in Hearne for the past fifteen years."

Beatrice Magnolia Robinson Ferguson (1906-1979) arrived circa 1933 in Hearne, Texas, about halfway between Dallas and Houston. She appears in the 1950 census at this 1101 West 1st Street address as a music teacher, and is listed as Negro. This mail-order business was apparently used to supplement her income. Her 1979 death certificate shows her at the same address and still a music teacher, and states that she had been in Hearne for 46 years.
