Additional Details

The Association for National Service was founded in March 1916, and soon renamed the National Association for Universal Military Training. Its goal was to promote mandatory national military service, as the United States was increasingly drawn toward war in Europe. This volume records membership dues in chronological order as they were received, also showing each member's address and membership level. The first entry is for the group's president, retired Lieutenant General Samuel Baldwin Marks Young. Among the many notable members recorded here are Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (page 22 and 66), Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum (page 24), photographer Edward S. Curtis (page 26), former Secretaries of War Henry L. Stimson (page 34) and Elihu Root (page 46), lumber magnate John P. Weyerhaeuser (page 64), and industrialist Charles Deering, who donated $2500 (page 66).
