Mydans was a celebrated Life Magazine staff photographer. This is a limited-edition print of one of his most iconic images, capturing the formal end of hostilities between Japan and the Allies. General Yoshijiro Umezu signs the Instrument of Surrender by command of Emperor Hirohito. Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu stands behind him, wearing a top hat. Douglas MacArthur as commander of the Allied forces stands at the microphone, back to the camera, waiting to accept the surrender.
