(WWI--POSTERS) A large and thorough archive with more than 2,450 photographs of World War I-era posters. A pictorial record of many of the American and European posters produced during the first World War and immediately thereafter. The posters span a range of themes, including Recruitment and Relief Efforts, Victory Bonds and War Savings Stamps, to the Y.W.C.A and Women's Suffrage. They are primarily American and British, with others from Canada, Scotland, Ireland, France, Poland, Italy, Germany, Greece, and elsewhere in Europe. Silver prints, the images measuring approximately 4 1/4x2 3/4 inches (10.8x7 cm.), the sheets 6x4 inches (15.2x10.2 cm.), each with a hand stamp or inventory notation in the lower margin. 1914-19
Apparently photographed by a cultural institution (which organized the materials in to 18 Eastman Kodak boxes), it's unclear why the archive was created. Many images depict posters that were produced during the latter months of 1918, just before the war ended, with additional relief-oriented images published after the war, in 1919. There is a possibility that some of these posters became obsolete, and are being seen here for the first time. About a quarter of the photographic images show text-based broadsides or posters.
