Additional Details

The accompanying undated letter from Allen explains that, in the late 1960s, he often visited the Brandywine illustrator Frank Schoonover, who showed him this image and shared its story. Schoonover explained that, in 1905, while illustrating an image of a dead horse for a Hopalong Cassidy book, he encountered difficulty in getting the angle of the animal's head just right. His friend N. C. Wyeth, who had just returned from a trip west and had drawn similar images, solved Schoonover's problem with this helpful drawing. Schoonover completed the illustration and placed one of Wyeth's hats in the corner of the image as an homage. Allen explains that he acquired the sketch some years later.<
