Steere reports on a mining disaster in Evanston: "There was an accident in one of the coal mines here Monday night, 13 men killed. It was a pretty tough sight, men all blown to pieces, find a leg in one place and head in another. The gas caught afire and caused an explosion." Near the Utah line, Evanston was predominantly Mormon, and Steere did his best to get along: "There is no danger about the Mormon girls. I am bullet proof against them. It is nothing to see a man here with two wives and sometimes three. . . . I have been dealing with them all the time since I have been here in Evanston. I praise the Mormon church, and that keeps me all right with them."
