Additional Details

Mordecai Throckmorton (circa 1742-1788) was helping Weedon to find competent marine troops to patrol the James River. Throckmorton writes: "I draughted from the militia under my command all the watermen, which amounted to fourteen only, there being thirty already sent up this river by order of Maj'r Gen'rl Barron Steuben to impress boats and bring them to this place." The next day he writes anxiously of "the exposed situation of Gloster County, where the familys of the people are liable to plundered from a small number of our enemies, who wait for an opportunity only." Two days later, he reports that his detachment of water men have succeeded in impressing seven boats. Cited in Ward, Duty, Honor or Country, page 178.
