Additional Details

Bruce Payne (1849-1917) was a Missouri native who came to Iowa before 1881. The Sioux City directories list him mostly as a stockyard worker from 1890 to 1916, but from 1900 to 1902 he was listed as a dehorner or brander on his own account--likely the period when this card was produced. The 1900 census lists him and his son as the only African Americans in his neighborhood.
