(MEXICO.) José María Montes de Oca, engraver. Three engravings of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and environs. 3 engravings, the first 11¼ x 13¼ inches, the other two about 12 x 16 inches; folds, minimal wear, the second two uncut. No place, circa 1790

Additional Details

Three rarely seen early views of what is now the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. The first is a distant view of the Virgen de Guadalupe complex showing the surrounding mountains and towns. The other two are perspective views showing more detail, keyed to the first view.

These three views are numbered 1 through 3, and are folded as if they are plates from a book. We have been unable to trace their source. Examples of plates 1 and 2 are held by the University of Texas at Austin, which regards them as stand-alone engravings.
