(PAPUA NEW GUINEA) A rare collection of approximately 324 images depicting the Marind-amin Tribe of Papua New Guinea.
The Marind tribe is known for their promiscuous ceremonies, their practice of headhunting, and their aggressive raids on surrounding New Guinea tribes. Despite their uncompromising reputation and having no official leadership of their many separate clans, the Marind people enjoyed a celebratory and peaceful life amongst themselves. This collection of photographs captures the serenity and culture of the tribe through intimate portraits detailing traditional costume and body art, documentation of tribes-people hunting and fishing, and the village architecture. Silver prints (25) and printing-out paper prints (299), the images measuring 3x2 to 6x5 inches (7.6x5.1 to 15.2x12.7 cm.), and the reverse, each with a US Army Examiner hand stamp, some with notations, in ink, on verso.
