Additional Details

An incredible mid-nineteenth-century manuscript for an unpublished account of the Azores and other North Atlantic Islands.

The author, Scottish military chaplain and amateur natural historian, Rev. Francis P. Flemyng, wrote and published several narratives of the various places he was stationed during his service, including "Kaffraria and Its Inhabitants", published in 1853; "Southern Africa: A Geography and Natural History of the Country, Colonies, and Inhabitants from the Cape of Good Hope to Angola", published in 1856; and a volume quite similarly titled to our present manuscript: "Mauritius; or the Isle of France: Being An Account of the Island, its History, Geography, Products, and Inhabitants", published in 1862.

The illustrations are nicely accomplished and, in the preface, Flemyng notes these are taken from his own portfolio of sketches made when he visited the various islands in 1849, 1852, and 1855.
