1776. (1997 revival.)
Lithograph, 20x26 inches oblong. Artist's proof, signed by Hirschfeld and annotated "AP IV/XV" in pencil, lower margin.
"This is a story about another one of those out-of-town tryouts that had a rocky road at first but then pulled in successfully to New York. This revival was also another masterpiece by designer Tony Walton, of Independence Hall. Jefferson is duking it out with John Adams over the Declaration of Independence while Ben Franklin is trying to stick his bum foot in the door. With those long tablecloths the joint looks a bit like a Twenties nightclub with a Colonial motif, but the show and the production, both times were high class. The production also had perhaps the greatest emotionally graphic ending of a play in my memory - an enlarged replica of the Declaration of Independence, projected on a translucent curtain. With Brent Spiner, Pat Hingle, and Paul Michael Valley." HOL/268.
