A. DONDOU COSULICH LINE TRIESTE. Circa 1930.
55x38 inches. S. D. Modiano, Trieste.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
Tapping into the romance of New World imagery as well as the forceful beauty of technology, we are shown, from the perspective of a Native American watching from the shadowed shore, a mighty ocean liner. The low angle, the impression of great speed and power formed by the prow slicing through the water, the elongated hull, and the streaming steam all together form an impressive sight. Shrouded in mystery, this poster has alternately been dated from 1930 and from 1939 (although in 1935 the Italian Line absorbed the Cosulich Line). Even the artist's true identity is unknown as some refer to him as Dondoli and others as Dondou. Another version exists with an additional line of text advertising; lettering in red. "Espressi Nord e Sud America". Bolaffi p. 82, Mer p. 185.
