A. E. FORREST THE IDLER. 1898.
293/4x20 inches. J. M. Dent, London.
Condition B+: restored losses and repaired tears in bottom margin; unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds.
Designed by a little known artist, this image of an 18th century scholar smoking a pipe in his library is executed in a radically modernist style as good and daring as William Nicholson. Describing British poster artists, W. S. Rodgers writes, "the artists who have produced work of more individuality than either Hardy or Hassal are men whose record shows far fewer examples than either of those; but in view of their great interest and undoubted high artistic excellence, they must receive due consideration. Such men as the Beggarstaffs, Forrest and the late Aubrey Beardsley come into this category." The broad outlining and the use of massive dark colors in contrast with the white form an image that "has a very distinct Nicholson flavor." (ibid). DFP I 38, Rodgers 36, Anglaise np.
