A. M. CASSANDRE (ADOLPHE MOURON, 1901-1968) PARIS. 1935.
39 3/4x24 1/4 inches.
Condition A-: minor restoration in margins.
After he designed his iconic image for the Normandie in 1935, Cassandre dropped his geometric approach to poster design, and abandoned the machine as his favorite subject. His style became soft and subtle, with a surrealist atmosphere. This graphic evolution led him to stage design and painting which became his major interests in the 1940s. Here, to promote Paris, he still uses his love of architecture and perspective. And the perspective he chooses is one of the city's most spectacular. The view, cleverly seen through a door at the Tuileries Gardens, passes the Place de la Concorde and goes up to the Arc de Triomphe. It is done in a dreamy symbolic style based on Surrealism and, indeed, elements of Magritte can be seen. The pastel tones, pigeons, and passersby all combine to build a masterpiece of soft harmony. Mouron 53, Train 267.
