On April 15, 1822, Sir Robert Mends was in command of the squadron off the coast of Africa, watching for privateers still importing slaves despite the British mandate against the trade. The Vigilante was captured on the river Bonney, a notorious route for slavers. Not only was the Vigilante taken, but two schooners and four brigs were spotted close by; two Spanish and four French. The total of slaves taken on board the ships was nearly a thousand. But for a hesitation of one French captain, the Vigilante was to be blown up with its cargo of 345 slaves.
